Agree with Chris but add that my main motives for not recording later
Nottingham would be Archaeology/DC related. A planning app in the Saxon
area calls for a different response than that to one in the C20 suburbs.

Hi Scott,
It's all a matter of judgement. As someone who maintains a similar
unitary authority HER, and from what I know of Nottingham,
-I would do as the NMR have done and have a record for the Saxon
burh/Lace Market
-I would also have a separate monument(s) for the Norman castle.
-A third monument for the mediaeval borough that developed between the
Saxon burgh and the castle along Castle Gate.
-A forth monument for the later mediaeval town enclosed by its walls
-Perhaps with a fifth for the Market Place.
-Is then up to you to decide to add any significant mediaeval suburbs
(perhaps near the main bridge across the Trent).
And so on..
Cheers
Chris

Hi all,
Apologies if this has already been responded to. I did send this a month
or two ago but all our email accounts were not working and I can't see
this message in the archives for the group so I'm assuming it didn't get
through.
I'm wondering how people deal with a place on the GIS and in HBSMR. The
National Monuments Record have the pre Conquest borough/Mercian burh of
Nottingham as a monument in its own right.
I can understand why that is, but then if the pre-Conquest settlement is
a monument in its own right, then shouldn't later expansions of
Nottingham also be monuments? Where do people draw the line as to which
places get classed as monuments when places are constantly growing? If
the pre Conquest borough is a monument then should I also record the
medieval town as a monument/place? To me, if you have the pre conquest
borough then you have to have the medieval town, then the post medieval
town and the modern town and you can keep dividing Nottingham's
expansion into several different records - Iron Age settlement etc. And
if so how does that get mapped in the GIS - just a point, or not bother
at all?
I am tempted to just use the Themes module to write a good piece
detailing the development of Nottingham over time and have additional
map layers to show the extents, rather than have monument records.
Thanks.
Best wishes,
Scott
